This position will be located in Utqiagvik, Alaska. This position will help lead the North Slope Borough (NSB)'s Department of Wildlife Management (DWM) with a research and management focus on bowhead and beluga whales, but may also be involved in studies of other important subsistence species in northern Alaska. The successful candidate will regularly interact with a number of other positions, including the NSB Mayor and their staff, the DWM director, deputy director, another Senior Wildlife Biologist, Research Biologist/veterinarian, other Wildlife Biologists, Research Assistant, Outreach Coordinator, Subsistence Coordinators and Specialists, Environmental Resource Specialist, and support staff. The DWM is involved in a wide range of studies and activities that focus on providing scientific information to support the sustainable use of subsistence resources. The position will focus on research but also be on the leadership team of DWM, provide advice on environmental change with respect to wildlife and fisheries management, biodiversity, industrial activities, and review of technical documents including those related to oil and gas activities. The successful candidate will work closely with the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission and the Alaska Beluga Whale Committee on issues related to research and co-management of bowhead and beluga whales, respectively, and will be expected to be actively involved with the International Whaling Commission's Scientific Committee. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a field related to biological science or management, 10 years of supervisory experience, 10 years of work experience in environmental and/or wildlife/fisheries research and management, and 10 years of wildlife/fisheries work experience in the Arctic. NSB prefers applicants with a strong background in Arctic ecology, with emphasis on marine animals; field experience in remote locations; experience working with Indigenous peoples and issues; strong communication skills and collaborative experience; and enthusiasm for living in a remote but vibrant community.
